In 1921 Picasso’s wife Olga gave birth to their first son, and, motherhood became the dominant theme of his paintings over the course of the next two years. A few years before he had abandoned his cubist style for a „classical“ one — a „classicism,“ however, without precedent and uniquely his own. The new style perfectly suited the new subject — the clear outlines, the classical rigidity of the heads, the gigantic proportions of the two figures that fill the canvas all serve endow the subject with grandeur and monumentality. A perfect candidate for a Mother’s Day painting from the most unlikely of sources.
